Fit Testing

Fit testing is used to ensure that respirators are used and worn correctly for healthcare workers. This is because they are often in direct contact with patients who have infectious respiratory diseases. Before a worker first uses a respirator, they must go through an initial testing. After that, there is an annual fit test for healthcare workers. In addition, there are other changes that require additional tests such as change in physical condition or obtaining a new model or type of respirator.

One thing to take into consideration is facial hair. Facial hair is a common obstacle when conducting a test because any hair that comes in contact with the seal of the respirator can cause a leak. Because of this, it is important to have a clean shaven face to ensure maximum protection is provided.

Importance of Fit Testing

Fit testing has a great importance because it checks the seal between the respirator and the healthcare worker’s face. It ensures that the respirator provides a tight seal and the correct amount of protection. If a respirator does not fit correctly then it does not provide a tight seal and allows contaminated air to enter. This exposes workers to harmful pathogens and does not provide the necessary protection.

Qualitative Test

One type of testing used is a qualitative test. This type of testing is pass or fail and relies on the senses of the user. In a qualitative test, it tests the detection of sweet and bitter using the senses of taste and smell. After completing the test, it is imperative that the exact same respirator is used while working. This is because each respirator varies and can affect the results of the fit test. For example, different models can vary in size and could result in a greater exposure to pathogens due to an incorrect fit.
