The Zika virus has been found in a Puerto Rican resident that has not traveled, meaning the virus was contracted on the island.
The Zika virus originated in the Zika forest of Uganda. The virus spreads through an infected Ardes species mosquito. These mosquitoes are also known to spread dengue fever and chikungunya viruses.
Common symptoms include:
-fever
-rashes
-joint pain
-red eyes
-headaches
Symptoms last about a week and gradually improve. There are no vaccines or drugs to cure or prevent the Zika virus. Medication should be taken to help relief pain.
As a result of the infection, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have issued a travel alert for people visiting Puerto Rico. The statement urges travelers to protect themselves against mosquito bites by using insect repellant, covering as much skin as possible, using window and door screens as well as emptying any standing water inside or outside the home.
Although complications and deaths from Zika virus are rare, travelers who experience any symptoms should be evaluated.
