What are the Components of ALICE?
ALICE is an active shooter response training mechanism, as mentioned above. Each of the letters in the acronym stand for a specific aspect of keeping those around you and yourself safe in case of an emergency situation. These letters stand for the following:
- A: Alert. Alert is being aware of your surroundings and is the first indication of danger. Its major goal is to notice symptoms of an emergency or to gather information about risk from others.
- L: Lockdown. ALICE’s extended “Lockdown” technique is an adaptable and strategic methodology that enables educators, students, and staff to successfully respond to emergencies where standard evacuation may be ineffective.
- I: Inform: Inform is a key communication approach that begins when you receive a hazard signal. Its major goal is to give clear, real-time information that allows people to make informed decisions after completing emergency response training, which may include measures such as evacuation or lockdown.
- C: Counter. While ALICE emphasizes the importance of using a variety of tactics to guarantee safety in life-threatening situations, Counter is especially created as a last resort. It uses noise, movement, distance, and distraction to reduce the shooter’s ability to precisely target persons.
- E: Evacuate. The primary goal of Evacuate is to create a physical gap between possible victims and armed intruders. When practicable and safe, the ideal answer is to flee the danger, even if it means taking non-traditional routes.
Understanding and implementing these strategies in your practice will be extremely important in keeping everyone safe at all costs. To learn more about how to handle an active shooter situation in your healthcare practice, click the button below.
