Managing Obstetric Hemorrhage Training

Course

The following Managing Obstetric Hemorrhage Training is designed to educate healthcare providers on the significance of obstetric hemorrhage as a major cause of maternal morbidity. Also, when working with pregnant individuals, it is important to understand any potential risk factors to be aware of. In addition, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is typically defined as blood loss greater than 500 milliliters (mL) after a vaginal birth and 1000 mL after a cesarean section. However, definitions vary, and the diagnosis of PPH is subjective and frequently based on erroneous blood loss estimates.

PPH is a Leading Cause of Maternal Mortality

Additionally, postpartum hemorrhages are a leading contributor to maternal mortality and morbidity globally, accounting for about 25% of all maternal pregnancy-related deaths. Several studies have revealed that many deaths caused by PPH could be avoided with early detection and more active treatment. PPH can cause severe morbidity, including complications such as:

  • Organ failure
  • Compartment syndrome
  • Acute respiratory distress syndrome
  • Anemia

Preventing Obstetric Hemorrhages in Your Practice

Additionally, using a routine and standardized hemorrhage risk assessment upon hospital admission may help prevent obstetric hemorrhages in your pregnant patients. Individual risk factors predict some cases of obstetric hemorrhage. A unit strategy for consistently assessing the risk of hemorrhage upon admission to antepartum or L&D units can also identify high-risk patients and ensure a prepared healthcare team. Risk assessment may include clinical conditions that raise the risk of bleeding, as well as patient preferences that limit the use of blood and blood products in the case of a hemorrhage.
