This causes glucose to build up in the blood instead of going into cells. Over time, this can cause heart disease, stroke, kidney failure and premature death. Steps can be taken to prevent Type 2 diabetes such as regular exercise, weight management and healthy food choices. People with prediabetes, meaning they are at high risk for developing diabetes, can often turn things around by incorporating these healthy lifestyle changes.
