HIV Affects Various Demographics

With nearly 50,000 people becoming infected with HIV / AIDS each year, it is not surprising that the Center for Disease Control (CDC) continues research in order to help promote prevention.

The CDC has encountered new numbers regarding HIV Infection and varying deomographics. Some of these facts are listed below:

  • The number of HIV diagnoses in Asians has increased; 1 in 5 Asians living with HIV do not know they have it
  • For Americans 50 and older, risk factors have increased because many women no longer worry about pregnancy and medication for erectile dysfunction facilitates intercourse for men not previously capable of performing intercourse
  • One out of four native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders in the United States are unaware they are living with HIV
  • Youth between the ages of 13 – 24 accounted for approximately 26% of newly reported HIV infections in 2010
  • Approximately 25% of HIV infections reported are in women
  • Individuals with HIV and latent TB infection are at a higher risk of attaining active TB disease than those with only TB infection
