A recent study suggests that woman that wakeup earlier in the mornings could have a lower risk of breast cancer. The research took place in Biobank UK. The participant pool that was observed was around 180,216 women. The type of tests that researchers used was multivariable regression analysis and a Mendelian Randomization analysis. The variables that the researchers took into account were; sleeping duration, whether you’re a morning or night person, and if you experienced sleep insomnia symptoms.
The research discovered that waking up earlier and having earlier mornings could have “protective effects” on a woman. The study suggests that a woman who wakes up earlier have a “10 in a 1,000” risk of breast cancer. That’s a risk factor of less than 1%. (Paddock) They suggested though that this does not have a big of an effect on increased risks of breast cancer as smoking and drinking alcohol does. Other causes of breast cancer include sleeping between 7-8 hours a night, scientist says this could have a harmful effect on breast cancer risk as well. Breast cancer starts from abnormal cell growth in the breast tissue. The cells that increasingly grow soon annex other nearby tissue causing it to spread to different parts of the body.
Approximately 3.5 million women are living with breast cancer in the United States according to a study conducted by the National Cancer Institute. The NCI also states that 13% of woman in the United States will get diagnosed with breast cancer once in their lives. (Paddock) Dr. Luca Magnani points out that “Modifying sleep habits could eventually lead to a decrease in the risk of breast cancer.”
