HIV infections in America have not gone up or down, according to the Center for Disease Control. There are ways to end this stall, however. Because many Americans are unaware of their options surrounding the infection, many go without proper testing and prevention methods.
The CDC has created a map designed to end the HIV epidemic in America. The first piece is getting more at-risk people to take the PrEP pill. The pill is designed to prevent the infection. Currently, only 18% of the at-risk population takes the pill. The CDC’s goal is to make it at least 50%.
Next, the CDC wants more people to get tested. 86% of patients know they have the disease. As a result, the CDC would like that number to be at at least 95%. In order to actually get people to take the test, there has to be more education in communities where it is considered a stigma.
Lastly, their goal is to increase the treatment levels of people who actually have it. Only 63% of people with the disease take medicine to control it. The CDC recommends getting regular testing and talking with your doctor about potential risks and how to be safe.
Finally, the only real way to end the epidemic is to be aware of it. Education will be a big part of the campaign to control it once and for all.
