An Increase in Coronavirus Cases

As of today, the number of coronavirus cases around the world is still increasing. According to the World Health Organization’s director-general, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, “In the last 24 hours, there have been 106,000 cases reported to WHO — the most in a single day since the outbreak began.” Of the 106,000 reported cases, about 67% came from just four countries alone.

The United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, and Brazil are the countries with the most confirmed cases. The increasing number of coronavirus cases in low-income countries is a major issue.

Johns Hopkins University reported that the number of confirmed coronavirus cases has just passed 5 million as of May 21, 2020.

The World Health Organization’s Response

President Donald Trump said he is using hydroxychloroquine (a malaria medicine) as a method to prevent COVID-19. The WHO explained that this medicine should not be used for COVID-19 and should only be used when approved for lupus and rheumatoid arthritis cases.

Additionally, President Trump claimed he will pull back from the WHO because he has not agreed with the way the WHO has dealt with the pandemic thus far. Tedros claimed that “WHO calls for accountability more than anyone.” The WHO will assess their actions taken to fight COVID-19 in the future.

Tedros has also noted that we have learned a lot from the pandemic, including the value of health and hygiene.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention Guidelines

The CDC has offered safety guidance in order to minimize the spread of COVID-19. The CDC is releasing precautionary steps as states begin to reopen. These steps help to mitigate risk and reduce the number of cases.
