Listeria outbreak in America

Listeria is impacting many people this New Year. Almark Foods produces hard boiled eggs. These eggs are the cause of the outbreak. As a result, the company has recalled its products linked to the disease. As a result, one person has died and a further four have been hospitalized.

To protect yourself from listeria, you must know what it is. Listeria is a type of food poisoning, according to the Center for Disease Control. It mainly impacts those with “weakened immune systems,” according to the CDC. This could include pregnant women, children, and the elderly.

Those who get listeria are at risk of developing blood infections that lead to sepsis. The CDC warns those at risk to be aware of flu-like symptoms and stiffness of the neck, headaches, confusion and loss of balance, among others.

If you are diagnosed with the infection, it is incredibly important to see a medical professional as soon as possible. It is treatable with antibiotics, therefore, the chances of mortality can be low if it is caught soon enough.

In the meantime, the CDC has mentioned that the effected products from Almark Foods come from their Gainseville facility. If the “best if used by date” is March 2, 2020, it should not be eaten. They also recommend cleaning your refrigerator to further rid your household of the disease.

Lastly, they stress that if you have any doubts about a given product, not to eat it.
