Who is at Risk for Workplace Violence?

Anyone working at a hospital can be a victim of violence. However, nurses and aides who have the most direct contact with patients are especially vulnerable. Additionally, providing your staff with the resources and information to keep themselves safe will help reduce the risk of workplace violence in your medical facility. Some higher-risk settings include psychiatric units, emergency rooms, geriatric units, and behavioral health units to name a few. These acts of violence can also come in four potential variations. These include violence by strangers with criminal intent, violence by patients, violence by coworkers, or violence by personal relations. Although your staff may feel safe within the workplace, it is important to educate healthcare providers on how to stay safe from any potential instances of workplace violence.

Requirements Specific to Maine

Additionally, in the state of Maine, some direct service program requirements include but are not limited to:

  • Establishing a system for centrally recording all incidents of workplace violence and threats of workplace violence against direct service workers.
  • Prepare a written workplace violence prevention and crisis response plan that includes measures to respond to an incident of workplace violence against a direct service worker.
  • Provide each direct service worker with a copy of the workplace violence prevention and crisis response plan.
