As COVID-19 cases surpass 33,000 in the United States, health organizations across the country are encouraging facilities to take drastic precautions to mitigate the spread of the virus. On Monday March 16, 2020; the American Dental Association (ADA) issued a recommendation calling for elective dental care procedures to be postponed for the next three weeks.
According to Chad P. Gehani, President of the ADA, “Concentrating on emergency dental care will allow us to care for our emergency patients and alleviate the burden that dental emergencies would place on hospital emergency departments.” Ultimately, provided the economic repercussions that come with these actions, the ADA permitted dentists to assess their capacity for operation. While some dental offices opted to adjust their hours, others sought complete closure.
In a field of frequent, close patient contact, preventative steps and social distancing is extremely difficult and nearly impossible. However, tele-dentistry companies such as SmileDirectClub are turning the tables. By providing remote orthodontic consultation, patients can receive the care they need from the comfort of their home.
