Universal Vaccine Breakthrough

A new vaccine breakthrough has been discovered. There is a new type of immune cell that can protect you from different types of influenza. Soon, we will not have to update our flu shots every year. This includes influenza  and A, B, C viruses. The body uses killer T cells to help fight against the the flu viruses. The T cells become active when signs of the influenza virus is present. This was discovered by a scientist who studies Epitopes. Epitopes are part of antigens or a foreign substance that can create a response in the immune system. The scientist used a technique called Mass Spectrometry to help understand the process.

“Mass Spectrometry is a technique that measures the weight and structure of small molecules very sensitively”. Scientist used this technique to find out what all viruses have in common. The parts of the virus’ that were discovered were shared across multiple different types of strains.

Our immune system is important because of all of the pathogens that our body engages with. Parts of our body including issues, cells and organs all work together to fight off harmful foreigns that try to harm our bodies like viruses. This process is important to understand because the immune system is what makes sure our body is running properly and functioning the correct way. Flu shots can help protect against certain viruses, but with this new discovery it could change the way we look at viruses. It is important to stay healthy during the flu season. Make sure to always be washing your hands and covering your mouth when coughing.
