Sexual harassment is prevalent in the workplace and has been reported at increasing rates throughout the year. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission “reveals that since 2010, more than 7,000 claims have been filed with the commission annually.” This sudden increase of reported sexual harassment cases has resulted in several social movements. For example, the Me Too campaign. Using real life scenarios can help better understand what constitutes as sexual harassment. There are two common forms of sexual harassment which include quid pro quo and a hostile work environment.
Sexual Harassment in the Workplace: Scenario One
Sophia works as an accountant, is known to be a hard worker, and is loved by her colleagues. One night, Sophia stays after hours to collaborate on a project with Nick. Once they leave, Nick offers to buy Sophia dinner and drop her off at home. She accepts the offer. But, when leaving dinner Nick asks Sophia if he can spend the night. She politely declines. Nick continues to ask if he can spend the night and Sophia continually declines. Nick then becomes angry and threatens to say negative things about her to their colleagues.
This is an example of the quid pro quo form of sexual harassment. Sophia did not accept Nick’s proposal for a sexual favor, and in return he attempts to hurt her reputation.
Sexual Harassment in the Workplace: Scenario Two
James is a new employee working at a large business firm. Emily is his boss and is very happy with his work ethic. She begins to invite James to her office. She then makes several verbal sexual remarks to James and says that they can only work together if James agrees to her sexual advances. James declines and Emily humiliates James in front of the whole business firm and disregards his work.
This is an example of a hostile form of workplace sexual harassment.
Sexual Harassment in the Workplace: Scenario Three
Anna works in a doctors office and spends the majority of her time with her colleague, Ben. Throughout the week, Ben tries touching the upper part of her chest, saying that he saw an ant. On another occasion, he approaches her and holds her waist. Anna is uncomfortable with these actions, but is scared to report it. Other colleagues begin to disrespect Anna. They gossip about her due to her perceived special treatment from Ben. This example involves unwelcome physical touching and the creation of a hostile work environment due to the gossip.
