Understanding Diversity and Inclusion
Diversity defines the foundation of the workplace. Employees come from a wide variety of different backgrounds and bring valuable perspectives and life experiences that inform the work they do. Workplaces should focus on and celebrate this uniqueness. They should embrace it for its strength.
Inclusion is just as important. Every member of the workplace should feel valued and respected. In order for people to share the ideas and experiences they bring to the table, they must feel like equal members of the team. This course teaches the skills to center diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
Why is Diversity Necessary in the Workplace?
Successful workplaces are constantly innovating. They discuss new ideas and find ways to implement them to improve the business. Furthermore, creativity is born out of everyone’s uniqueness. Ultimately, by listening to a variety of perspectives, the best ideas can ultimately be implemented.
Diverseness does not come in a single form. There are many types, all of which bring different perspectives to the table. Learn more about the different types of diversity and why they matter in this course.
Legal Protections Against Discrimination
The government protects workers from experiencing discrimination. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) prevents employment discrimination and promotes equal opportunity in the workplace for all. Additionally, the EEOC aims to create inclusive workplaces where everyone is respected. You can learn more about the responsibilities of this government agency, and how it impacts your business, by taking this course.
Best Practices
Supporting a diversity and inclusion initiative requires effort from every level of an organization. Upper management must have a vision and ensure leadership implements it. The initiative must be present at every level of the organization and be based on feedback from employees. Additionally, management should monitor the success of the initiative and adjust it to be as effective as possible.
Initiatives should improve the overall environment of the workplace, and include enforcement requirements to ensure its effectiveness. Management should collect data pertaining to diversity and inclusion, and consult with employees on changes they think need to be made. Businesses should align these changes with the firm’s objective, in order to make clear goals in line with the overall strategy. The course teaches you techniques for implementing such initiatives in effective ways.
Communication
Shaping initiatives is important. However, it is equally important for employers to communicate these initiatives with employees. Employees cannot comply and uphold the mission if they do not understand it. Additionally, employers should solicit feedback from staff when crafting these initiatives. Otherwise, they will appear out of touch.
Additionally, the old adage “it’s not what you say, but how you say it,” applies. How the message is delivered will impact its effectiveness. Consider how you will communicate about diversity and inclusion with staff. Make sure communication is continuous and over multiple channels. Crafting presentations can also be effective.
The Americans with Disabilities Act
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is one of many anti-discrimination laws in the United States. Employers are required to abide by the ADA at all times. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The Americans with Disabilities Act requires employers to make reasonable accommodations for employees’ disabilities. Additionally, discrimination against employees with disabilities is prohibited. There are many rules governing employers regarding employees with disabilities. This course will teach you about these regulations and how to comply with them.
The ADA and other anti-discrimination laws have applied before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Many employers struggled to enforce these regulations during the pandemic, but the law did not change. Understanding how to uphold anti-discrimination laws when other facts are stressing a business (such as a pandemic) is essential to protecting the health of employees.
