Women face high cancer risks

“All women are at risk for gynecologic cancers,” according to the Center for Disease Control. That’s right, all women. Cancer does not discriminate based on age or race.

It is more important than ever to be aware of reproductive organs and detect symptoms early. Cancer is a very scary prospect, but there are some tips to recognize and prevent gynecologic cancer.

Firstly, pelvic pain and pressure is important to look out for. Women may also experience feeling full faster and unexplained vaginal bleeding. Patients who experience these symptoms should see a doctor immediately, even if they turn out to be nothing.

Fortunately, one of the ways to prevent gynecologic cancer is through the HPV vaccine. This prevents “cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers” according to the CDC. Women should begin getting Pap smears at the age of 21. These are crucial for early detection. Those between the ages of 30 to 65 should consider getting Pap smears as well as an HPV test, although they can get either one.

Some women are predisposed to certain cancers. If this is the case, patients should see their doctors about suitable ways to prevent it from occurring.

Finally, if anyone feels any sliver of doubt about their symptoms, it is important to acknowledge them and see a doctor. In 2018, 32,120 women died from gynecologic cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. When in doubt, always see a doctor.
