The Center for Disease Control released the 2018 National and State Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) Progress Report. The report shows the occurrences of diseases in healthcare settings. The settings the CDC monitors are acute care hospitals, critical access hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, and long-term acute care hospitals. They sought to track the disease rate since 2015.
The CDC was also tracking the rate of diseases such as central-line bloodstream infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus blood stream events, and Clostridioides difficile events.
Firstly, they found a 9% decrease in CLABSIs between 2017 and 2018. CAUTIs also saw an 8% decrease. The intensive care unit saw the largest amount of decrease at 11%. There was also a decrease in C. difficile infections.
Perhaps most noteworthy, however, was that there was no decrease in surgical site infections. Also, there was also no “significant change” in the rate of MRSA infections between 2017 and 2018. Overall, however, the CDC saw a huge increase in states that were performing better in their report since 2015.
While there has been an improvement in the rate of diseases contracted in a hospital setting, the CDC also recognizes the need for constant improvement. They created the Antibiotic Resistance & Safety Portal, specifically to aid in the data-collecting process.
