How to Create an Effective Compliance Plan: Element 2

After reading last weeks blog, I am sure that there are still many questions you have about what goes into an effective compliance plan. American Medical Compliance is here to help. Last week, we focused on Element 1: Standards, Policies, and Procedures, and we explained the importance of ensuring the correctness of all policies and procedures.

This week, we are moving onto Element 2: Compliance Program Administration

To understand what exactly this means, we will break it down. Administration is defined as “the process or activity of running a business, organization, etc.” Having a compliance program and administering the program properly is essential in running your business, and you can do so with these tips:

  • Create an annual reviewing system for your compliance plan
  • Maintain a complete compliance budget – and understand it!
  • Convene within oversight committees and collaborate with others
  • Recognize the need for outside expertise and know when to ask for help
  • Understand compliance plans take time and effort – plan for this accordingly
  • Clearly state the compliance program responsibilities to the entire staff once completed
  • Recognize the importance of compliance education programs – such as AMC!

Administering a compliance plan might not be easy, but it is most certainly necessary and can end up saving you a lot of trouble in the long run. While making the compliance program, remember why you are doing so! Some of the benefits of having an effective compliance program include (but most definitely are not limited to):

  • You get to protect your organization
  • You know if there is an issue in your compliance before anyone else does
  • Realize you might need to spend money to save money – avoid attorney fees and OSHA/HIPAA fines!
  • You get to worry about what you do best – We got the rest covered.
