What are the Components of Active Shooter Response Training?

Active Shooter Response Training equips individuals with the knowledge and strategies needed to protect themselves and others during an emergency situation. The training is built around five core components:

  • Situational Awareness. This involves being aware of your surroundings and recognizing the first signs of danger. Its primary goal is to notice indicators of an emergency or to gather information about a potential threat from those around you.
  • Securing the Area. This is an adaptable and strategic methodology that enables educators, students, and staff to successfully respond to emergencies where standard evacuation may be ineffective.
  • Communication. This is a key approach that begins when a hazard signal is received. Its primary goal is to provide clear, real-time information that allows people to make informed decisions — which may include measures such as securing the area or evacuation.
  • Defensive Action. This component is designed specifically as a last resort in life-threatening situations. It uses noise, movement, distance, and distraction to reduce a shooter’s ability to precisely target individuals.
  • Evacuation. The primary goal of this component is to create a physical gap between potential victims and an armed intruder. When safe and practicable, fleeing the danger is the preferred response, even if it means taking non-traditional routes.

Understanding and implementing these strategies will be extremely important in keeping everyone safe. To learn more about how to handle an active shooter situation in your healthcare practice, click the button below.
