Understanding HIPAA Compliance

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), enacted in 1996, is a critical regulation in the United States that sets the standard for protecting sensitive patient data. Furthermore, healthcare providers are increasingly adopting digital technologies to store, process, and transmit medical information. Moreover, the Privacy Rule establishes national standards for the protection of individually identifiable health information.

This Rule gives patients rights over their health information. However, the Security Rule complements the Privacy Rule by setting standard for ensuring that only those who should have access to electronic protected health information (EPHI) will actually have access.  Also, it requires appropriate administrative safeguards to ensure the confidentiality of electronic medical records.

HIPAA Compliance for Covered Entities

If a company is classified as a covered entity, they are required to adhere strictly to HIPAA rules and regulations. Consequently, these regulations are designed to safeguard the privacy of health information. Therefore, covered entities, which include healthcare providers, health plans, and healthcare clearinghouses, must implement both administrative and technical safeguards to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of protected health information (PHI).

This involves physical security measures and the encryption of electronic data.
