Cultural Competence in the Care of LGBTQ Patients

The LGBTQ+ community comprises people from many backgrounds and cultures. It also encompasses all races, ethnicities, religious beliefs, and socioeconomic statuses. Furthermore, the healthcare needs of the LGBTQ population should be considered to provide the best possible care and reduce inequities. Providing culturally competent care for someone in this community includes:
  • Care directed at a specific population
  • Social and structural equality of care
  • Avoidance of discrimination and stigmatization
There are other steps that your dental practice can take to provide inclusive care for patients in the LGBTQ+ community among those listed above, however, taking the steps to become more aware is extremely valuable.

Creating an Inclusive and Welcoming Environment

Many healthcare workers do not frequently discuss sexual orientation or gender identity (SO/GI) with patients, and many facilities lack methods for collecting organized SO/GI data from all patients. Without this information, LGBTQ+ individuals and their unique healthcare needs cannot be identified, health inequalities cannot be addressed, and critical healthcare services may not be provided.
