Who is at Risk for Workplace Violence?

Although anyone working at a hospital can be a victim of violence, nurses and aides who have the most direct contact with patients are especially vulnerable. Additionally, providing your staff with the resources and information to keep themselves safe will help reduce the risk of workplace violence in your medical facility.

Some higher-risk settings include psychiatric units, emergency rooms, geriatric units, and behavioral health units to name a few. These acts of violence can also come in four potential variations. These include violence by strangers with criminal intent, violence by patients, violence by coworkers, or violence by personal relations. Although your staff may feel safe within the workplace, it is important to educate healthcare providers on how to stay safe from any potential instances of workplace violence.

Requirements Specific to New Hampshire

Additionally, in New Hampshire, SB 459-FN requires every health facility to create and maintain a workplace violence prevention program. This program must be created by a multidisciplinary team of direct care staff and others, in collaboration with stakeholders or specialists in workplace violence prevention, emergency response, or another related field of expertise. Furthermore, the program must address the size and complexity of the health facility and should:

  • Include policies and procedures to prevent and respond to workplace violence.
  • Provide appropriate training, education, and resources to all employees based on their roles and responsibilities at the time of hire.
  • Establish a process to report workplace violence incidents internally and externally to analyze incidents and trends.
  • Establish a process for follow-up and support to victims and witnesses affected by workplace violence, including information about available counseling.
  • Establish a process to conduct an annual facility-specific risk assessment.
