Proper vs Improper Conduct in the Workplace

Inappropriate conduct is broader than harassment, because it does not require membership in a protected class.

This includes any comments or conduct that disparages or demonstrates hostility or aversion towards any person that could reasonably be perceived as disruptive, disrespectful, offensive, or inappropriate in the workplace.

Some Examples Include:

  • Physical intimidation or aggressions
  • Inappropriate gestures
  • Threats made against others or threatening behavior

In sum, this course teaches healthcare providers to recognize and prevent inappropriate conduct that disrupts the workplace and affects patient care. Providers will learn how actions like physical intimidation, inappropriate gestures, and threats create a hostile environment. Understanding and addressing these behaviors fosters a respectful, professional setting that ensures teamwork, patient trust, and a safe healthcare environment.

Working as a Team to Improve Patient Care

Healthcare professionals widely recognize effective teamwork as essential for delivering patient-centered care. Specifically, teamwork strengthens collaboration and ensures comprehensive care. Moreover, teams vary in structure and complexity. While many believe multidisciplinary teams are most effective, in reality, single-discipline teams also play a crucial role.

In general, a team consists of two or more individuals who interact dynamically, adapt, and work interdependently toward a shared goal. Each member fulfills specific roles and responsibilities, creating an organized and efficient workflow. Furthermore, team-based healthcare engages individuals, families, and at least two healthcare providers who collaborate with patients and caregivers. As a result, this approach ensures coordinated, high-quality care across different settings.

Through this course, healthcare providers will learn how teamwork enhances patient-centered care. Additionally, they will develop skills to collaborate effectively within diverse healthcare teams, whether multidisciplinary or within a single profession. By applying these skills, providers improve coordination, boost patient outcomes, and ensure high-quality healthcare delivery. Ultimately, mastering teamwork strengthens communication, increases efficiency, and builds patient trust.

The Development and Characteristics of a Successful Health Care Team

Different types of teams can be identified in health care systems:

Core teams: These are directly involved in caring for the patient.

Coordinating teams: The group responsible for operational management, coordinating functions and resource management for core teams.

Contingency teams: Formed to deal with emergencies or specific events.

Ancillary teams/services: The group supports services that facilitate patient care such as cleaners or domestic staff.

Support services and administration: Those who provide indirect, task-specific services in a health-care facility support services.

In total, this course teaches healthcare providers the roles of different healthcare teams and their impact on patient care. Providers will learn how core, coordinating, contingency, ancillary, and support teams work together to ensure smooth operations and effective treatment. Understanding these roles improves collaboration, enhances efficiency, and strengthens patient care.

Respect and Dignity in the Workplace

Everyone in the workplace must treat colleagues with dignity and respect. Otherwise, disrespectful behavior threatens employee health, safety, and well-being.

Furthermore, a respectful workplace depends on the cooperation and support of all employees.

Therefore, each person must set a positive example and avoid actions that offend, embarrass, or humiliate others.

Through this course, healthcare providers will learn how workplace behavior affects team dynamics and patient care. Additionally, the training emphasizes strategies to foster a culture of respect, cooperation, and professionalism, ensuring a safe and supportive healthcare environment.
