The following Understanding and Preventing Workplace Bullying and Harassment Training for Healthcare Providers is designed to educate healthcare providers on the definition of workplace bullying. Also, harassment is a form of employment discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, (ADEA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, (ADA). Understanding this term is extremely helpful in going through this course and helps resolve any negative behaviors occurring within your practice.

What Constitutes Offensive Behavior in the Workplace?

Offensive behavior can take various forms, including offensive jokes, slurs, insults, name-calling, physical attacks, intimidation, ridicule, insults, offensive objects, and interference with work performance. Additionally, harassment can occur in a variety of circumstances, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • The harasser can be the victim’s supervisor, a supervisor in another area, an agent of the employer, a co-worker, or a non-employee.
  • The victim does not have to be the person harassed but can be anyone affected by the offensive conduct.
  • Unlawful harassment may occur without economic injury to, or discharge of, the victim.

Prevention is the best tool to eliminate harassment and potential bullying in the workplace. In addition, understanding the steps to take to prevent workplace harassment will ensure a positive environment for your staff and patients, and in turn, increase the quality of care provided.

Creating a Positive Workplace Environment

Workplace bullying is the repetitive, health-damaging abuse of one or more people (targets) by colleagues or coworkers. Also, bullying in the workplace can take a variety of forms. These include but are not limited to verbal abuse, threatening, humiliating, frightening, or insulting behavior, or interference and sabotage that stops work from being completed.

How to Respond to Workplace Bullying

If you experience bullying in the workplace, address the bully’s behavior directly, politely, and professionally. Furthermore, if the mistreatment persists, document the pattern of episodes and notify your Component’s Anti-Harassment Office. On the other hand, if you see someone else being bullied, bring it to their attention, offer emotional support, and encourage them to report the behavior if it persists.
