Cyclospora infections are currently under investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), federal, state and local public health partners due to increasing infections.
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a single-felled parasite which causes intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis (cyclospora).
As of August 2015, the CDC reports 384 illnesses from 26 states. Clusters of illness have been linked to restaurants and events in Texas, Wisconsin and Georgia. Investigations in Texas and Wisconsin have preliminary identified cilantro.
Symptoms of cyclosporiasis may include:
- Watery diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Cramping
- Bloating
- Increased gas
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Vomiting
- Low-grade fever
Cyclospora can not be treated with chlorine or iodine. There is currently no vaccine available.
