How to Support LGBTQIA+ Youth

LGBTQIA+ people in the United States continue to face more challenges than ever. Different policy proposals and bills have fostered both a negative and damaging environment. These bills create a place full of shame, rather than a feeling of acceptance. This environment has a drastic effect on the mental and physical health of LGBTQIA+ people, specifically the younger population. The LGBTQIA+ youth are continually faced with opposition, but there are several steps you can take your show your support.

How the Nation is Impacting LGBTQIA+ Youth

Jonah DeChants, a pHD research scientist for the nonprofit The Trevor Project explains that, “LGBTQ young people often experience disproportionate mental health challenges because of how they are mistreated and stigmatized by society.” LGBTQIA+ youth face higher chances of rejection, discrimination and bullying when compared to non-LGBTQ peers. These negative experiences continue to build up until they have a detrimental effect on their mental health.

On top of that, LGBTQ youth face challenges and deal with stressors that do not even cross others minds. For example, coming out and the stress of what other people will think about them.

Hundreds of anti-LGBTQ bills have been filed within this past year. This contributes greatly to the negative environment created in the United States. These bills convey terrible messages to youth that they simply cannot exist happily. The bills range from preventing transgender participation in youth sports to banning the discussion of LGBTQIA+ topics in the classroom.

Things such as youth sports should be used to build friendships, feel included, and a method to cope with stress. But instead, these things are taken away from them. Additional laws, such as the “Don’t Say Gay” law conveys another horrible message that the youth should keep their identities silent and should be something to be ashamed of.

Steps to Support LGBTQIA+ Youth

Clearly stand for the LGBTQIA+ youth to show your support and respect. Standing as an ally can take the form of several different things. For example, using the correct name and pronouns, discussing common issues with peers and coworkers, and confronting anti-LGBTQ language.

Take action and speak up on things that are wrong. Voice your opinion through emails and use your vote wisely. Be sure to research what politicians stand for, and if they are supporters of anti-gay legislation, do not vote for them.

Using the correct pronouns is important as it is a part of a person’s identity. To show additional support, you can begin by introducing your own pronouns in everyday conversations to bring a sense of normalcy around this introduction.

Educate yourself on current issues. Having knowledge on issues and staying updated on changes shows respect and that you are in active support of the LGBTQ+ community. You can stay up to date by reading various articles or by attending local events.

Importance of Supporting the Youth Population

Your support and action has a great impact on the youth population. The action taken can vary. It can be on a small scale or large scale, but all is helpful and contributes to the building of a strong community in support of the LGBTQ+ youth.

Much of the youth population continues to struggle with mental health issues. A sense of acceptance can greatly improve their mental health and reduce suicide attempts. Additionally, the continued support from others and resources can also make a positive impact on someone’s life.
