Violence in the Workplace

Violence in the workplace is a large issue that greatly affects the nation, specifically among safety and health professionals. Data collected from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has supported this ongoing issue. In addition, it shows the importance of taking future preventative action. Unfortunately, workplace violence often times goes unnoticed. Despite the fact that the number of homicides and millions of workers assaulted continues to climb. Therefore, it is important for people to understand the issue and take action.

Workplace Violence

The definition of workplace violence is difficult because many people have various views on the topic. It can range from threats and harassment to uncomfortable language and actions. The NIOSH defines it as a “violent act, including physical assaults and threats of assault, directed toward persons at work or on duty” (CDC, 2014). Regarding workplace violence, physical injuries have been studied to the greatest extent. This is because they are the easiest to measure.

Negative Effects of Violence in the Workplace

The study of workplace violence is important due to the several negative effects. To begin, it is one of the greatest contributors to death and injury while working. Data collected by NIOSH shows that “an average of 20 workers are murdered and 18,000 are assaulted each week while at work or on duty” (CDC, 2014).

In addition, violence is specific to occupational settings. Specific people experience more violence solely based on their occupation. The majority of homicides and nonfatal assaults take place in retail tread and service industries. This will continue to be a great issue as the United States is beginning to use service sectors more. Lastly, workplace violence is specific to certain factor, including dealing with the public, exchanging money, and delivery services.

Preventing Workplace Violence

Overall, it is important to understand the negative effects. This helps better understand the urgent need to take actions of prevention. There are various strategies depending on the different workplace. This includes changing the way work is done, informing others about the occupational safety and health issue, and shifting the focus to prevention.
