Many popular supplements cause liver failure. A popular dietary supplement called OxyELITE Pro (OEP) is responsible for many cases. Thus, the Center for Disease Control investigated the link between liver damage and dietary supplements. Consequently, drugs like OEP are a main contributor to liver damage.
The University of Michigan Health Lab found that many users of these drugs are not taking them with a doctor’s permission. Athletes in particular are prone to liver damage from diet supplements. One of the most common ingredients found in supplements is green tea extract. The same study found that green tea extract and other “natural” ingredients are responsible for liver failure. Too much green tea extract can be fatal.
The Gastroenterology and Hepatology journal reported that over half of Americans take some form of diet supplement. Furthermore, they also found that some ingredients in bodybuilding supplements are illegal and highly toxic. One of those found include anabolic steroids.
The Food and Drug Administration is trying to do more to hold the supplement industry accountable. While there is no way to determine what ingredients are present, the FDA conducted their own study. They named Hydroxy-cut products as being especially harmful. As a result, 14 Hydroxy-cut removed 14 of their products.
There is still no universal way in which to test all ingredients. Until then, consumers must be especially careful of what they consume in their diets.
