OSHA and HIPAA Regulations

OSHA and HIPAA regulations were created for the safety of both patients and the staff. This includes the physical well being and private information of every employee as well as staff members. The compliance rules are set in place to help reduce risk in the workplace. On a regular basis conducted annually, OSHA training for medical and dental practices are a must. All new hires should complete OSHA training within ten days from their hiring date. HIPAA training is mandatory for people who come into contact with protected health information, for example, patient information. This goes for medical and dental practices.

HIPAA training does not require a set amount of time to complete the courses but should be done in a timely manner. It is also very important to keep documentation of the completed trainings. As a result, the documents should consist of; date of trainings, contact of the trainers, and names and qualifications of trainers.

Furthermore, if your company does not complete the specifications, it could result in fines. These fines can be anywhere from $0-$70,000 for OSHA and up to 1.5 million for HIPAA, depending on the severity. HIPAA penalties can also result in civil or criminal charges. Additionally, for doctors or nurses, this can result in ethical violations and loss of incenses. Obtaining training is important in order to avoid these infractions. Lastly, it is important that your company follows compliance programs set by employers.
