Tropical Storm Michael Safety Protocol

In the wake of the recent tropical storm Michael, OSHA is once again urging vigilance from both residents and cleanup crews living in the affected areas. Following a giant storm like that, it would feel like the danger has passed, but that is not always the case. There are plenty of dangers that come at the result of a storm, so it’s important to stay safe.

According to OSHA, “Recovery efforts after the storm may involve hazards related to restoring electricity and communications, debris removal, repairing damage from water intrusion, roof repair, and tree trimming. Only individuals with proper training, equipment, and experience should conduct recovery and cleanup activities.”

While it might be tempting for a regular resident to try and clean up themselves, this is not always the best option. There are plenty of hidden dangers hidden after a giant storm. These dangers could include leaked toxic waste, active power lines, or unstable surfaces. Cleanup is best left to the professionals.

OSHA also urges employers to be mindful of dangers and make sure to remind their employees of proper safety protocol. This safety protocol includes:

  • Checking the area for any hazards.
  • Checking the stability of buildings and walking surfaces.
  • Fall protection.
  • Assuming all power lines are active.
  • Using all equipment properly and safely, no cutting corners.
  • Using personal protective equipment at all times, no matter how minor the threat may seem.

At this point, employees used to storms are probably already aware of this protocol, but a reminder never hurts. Better to be safe than sorry.
