COVID-19 is a deadly disease, and it is testing the capacity of the U.S. healthcare system. Cases of COVID-19 have ramped up recently, forcing school and entertainment closures. But, how can your organization be more prepared?
Thus, as it stands, there are currently over a fifteen thousand cases in 42 states according to The Wall Street Journal. There are not enough ventilators or equipment to stem the disease should it grow further out of control. There are also not enough tests for potential infections. Harvard epidemiology professor Mark Lipsitch conducted a study that found American hospitals were not equipped to deal with a large outbreak.
There are also not enough ventilators, either. Lipsitch said there would be no way a city like New York City could accommodate 2,000 patients in need of ventilators. At this point, many hospitals are seeking alternative solutions in case the pandemic continues to rise. These include making rooms in places like storage closets and abandoned buildings.
Also, another potential problem that has arisen is the lack of staff and overworked staff. For example, in Italy, there was a nurse who collapsed after 10 hours of work. In the United States, many hospital workers cannot work anymore. If they have had any contact with someone infected with COVID-19, they have to be quarantined for 14 days.
The situation in rural America is under even more stress. There is already a lack of healthcare professionals as it stands now.
