Understanding Organ Transplants and the Donation System
By Alexa Treubert
Organ transplants are a concept that nearly everyone has heard of, but many do not know the medical, legal, and ethical situations and issues that can arise from them. When taking this course, you will learn about each of these situations, and the different types of transplants there are. The course is brief, and will only take around 20 minutes to complete. However, it can completely open your eyes to the education and awareness needed for transplants. The first lesson page is a shocking statistic, encouraging the importance of organ transplants and education.
Currently more than 121,000 people in the U.S. are waiting for an organ transplant. Due to demand that exceeds supply, only 30,000 transplants are performed each year. On average, 22 people will die each day while waiting for an organ.
An Overview
Despite kidneys being the most commonly donated organs, there are countless other organs that are needed as well. Some examples of accepted organs are heart, lungs, colon, pancreas, skin, corneas, heart valves, bone, cartilage and tendons. The lesson went on the explain the differences between a opt-in system (which we have in the US) or the opt out system which is common in other countries. There is also information on how one would volunteer to be an organ donor.
Furthermore, the course explained the 3 types of organ donors, and the differences between a directed and non-directed donor, as well. One of the most important topics explained is the many hurdles that come with organ donation, ranging from health complications, to age, and to psychological pressure. There are several reasons why a person would not be able to donate. Our course listed those reasons in an interesting bullet-point list shown below.
Organ donation is a topic that anyone could use some education from.
